Lira District Uganda 2011–2012

ICT Specialist / Curriculum Developer / Trainer

Lira District Local Government — Uganda • Jan 2011 – Nov 2012

Working within Lira District Local Government, Sally supported district-level digital education and ICT development. This role deepened her on-the-ground understanding of how educators adopt technology, which now underpins the practical, real-world training courses she creates and delivers.

Educator supporting ICT training and digital literacy in an African classroom

Role Highlights

Equipping Soroti Inspectors with Digital Tools for Communications

Sally developed a practical curriculum for school inspectors in the town of Soroti, equipping them to use Excel and PowerPoint to prepare and present their monthly reports with confidence and accuracy.

Impact: Built a foundation of confident ICT users in teacher education, experience that now shapes her course design for educators and trainers.

NUYDP Youth development project oversight

Sally contributed to the NUYDP project, which supported 12 youth groups by providing business equipment, structured mentoring, and targeted training. The groups developed enterprises in tailoring, baking, animal husbandry, and agricultural crop production, and the youth also learned to formulate and produce soap using locally sourced ingredients.

Impact: Youth were empowered with practical skills and the tools to build sustainable livelihoods within their communities.

Building IT resource centres and digital literacy

Sally helped establish and support IT resource centres that served schools, teachers, and the wider community. She championed digital literacy programmes that made technology approachable, focusing on simple, repeatable activities that staff could continue after training sessions ended.

Impact: Created sustainable spaces for ongoing digital learning, a model she now draws on when designing training materials and learning resources.

A Continued Connection: Mentoring Lira Youth

Sally’s connection to the youth of Lira didn’t end when she left Uganda. She has continued to mentor young people in Lira for years, most recently developing and delivering remote training in soap making — equipping them with a practical, marketable skill using locally available ingredients. A course created for this work is available in her portfolio.

This chapter of Sally’s career continues to inform the way she designs and delivers training today: grounded in real classroom and community context, focused on what practitioners actually need, and always aimed at making digital tools genuinely useful in everyday work.
